The leadership of Fresh Start
was humbled, when the ministry was selected by the State of California to be
one of four agencies statewide to develop a youth mentoring program.
Fresh Starts’ Mentoring Program is staffed by adult volunteers
who desire to make a real difference in the lives of young people, between the ages
of 8 to 24.
Both mentors and mentees complete an interest survey from which the
best match can be made.
Our mentors come from a diverse background of careers, ages, and
life experiences; all wishing to instill positive influences by inspiring, instructing
and encourage their young person. Mentors offer a ready listening ear to a
mentee; who share their frustrations, joys, problems, and successes. In
general mentors meet the mentees’ parents and mutually agree how time will be
spent with the young person. Mentors maintain a caring relationship with
their mentees by such activities as talking on the telephone, visiting, going
to the movies, taking them for a meal or an ice cream.
As a faith-based ministry, it is during such opportunities that our
mentors share the love of Jesus Christ. If the young person is willing,
the mentor will offer a prayer, asking for God to work out the issues in the
young person’s life.
